TasRex committed to delivering local benefits from renewable development
An exciting new chapter in Tasmania’s rich history of renewable energy production has begun, with the official launch of TasRex – a home-grown solar and wind energy company, working to develop clean industry in the state.
TasRex is progressing the staged construction of up to 5 GW of onshore and offshore renewable energy opportunities across Tasmania, starting with a 288 MW solar farm in the Northern Midlands, currently going through the planning process.
TasRex CEO, Bess Clark, said the company was proud to have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tasmanian Government that put a commitment to local jobs and strengthening the Tasmanian supply chain at the forefront of TasRex’s plans.
“TasRex is a Tasmanian company that is committed to making a long-term contribution, not only to our clean energy future, but to the community as a whole,” Ms Clark said.
“We passionately believe in the need to develop renewable energy projects in partnership with communities, to maximise local job creation and support the Tasmanian manufacturing sector.”
TasRex co-founder and leading ammonia expert, John Mott, said producing more renewable energy was critical to decarbonising existing industries and attracting investment in new industries, including proposed new clean fuel (ammonia and methanol) projects in North West Tasmania and Bell Bay.
“In addition to building new solar and wind farms, TasRex is focussed on leveraging Tasmania’s renewable energy advantage and new technologies to meet growing global demand for clean fuels,” Mr Mott said.
Peter Downie, carbon farmer, developer of Cattle Hill wind farm and TasRex co-founder, said the company wanted to leave a legacy that would benefit Tasmania for generations to come.
“TasRex is committed to ensuring Tasmanians benefit directly from our abundant renewable energy resource,” Mr Downie said.
“The world is in a once in 60-year transition to a renewable economy and Tasmania is so well positioned, but it’s important that we stay ahead of the wave.
“Our focus is on ensuring the benefits of our state’s abundant renewable energy stay in Tasmania, through local ownership and supporting local jobs and industries.
“We look forward to working with business, government, landowners and communities to develop profitable projects that retain economic, social and environmental benefits on our island.”
